Berlin (dpa) - The main train stations in Cologne, Essen and Düsseldorf had the highest numbers of drug offenses recorded in the country in the past half year.

This emerges from information from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to the AfD parliamentary group, which is available to the German Press Agency.

Accordingly, the authorities recorded 272 narcotic offenses at Cologne Central Station between July and December 2020, followed by 235 cases at Essen Central Station and 206 cases at Düsseldorf Central Station.

When it comes to violations of the Weapons Act, Cologne Central Station is also in the lead nationwide with 15 offenses, followed by Essen Central Station with 14 offenses.

In the case of property crimes such as theft, Frankfurt Central Station leads the negative statistics with 744 incidents, followed by Hamburg (572 acts) and Cologne (504 acts).

In terms of violent crimes, Hamburg Central Station was ahead in the past six months.

The authorities recorded a total of 300 cases there between July and December 2020. Behind the Hamburg one are the Frankfurt station with 238 and the Nuremberg main station with 189 violent crimes.

When asked about similarities between the above-mentioned train stations and the reasons for their appearance in the statistics, the ministry wrote that they were "large train stations in urban centers with connections to the rail networks of neighboring countries".

Large train stations in metropolitan areas developed a "pull effect on criminals", which is mainly due to their constant operation, their "hustle and bustle", options for supply and disposal and for travel to and from the airport.

Central bus stations, social stations and drug consumption rooms are located nearby.

A comparatively high proportion of suspects did not have German citizenship in the offenses surveyed: in the area of violent crime, it is more than 40 percent, in drug offenses it is around a third, and in property offenses even more than half.

Poles, Syrians, Turks and Afghans appear comparatively often as suspects in the statistics on violent acts.

In the second half of last year, a total of 198 federal police officers were injured on duty in violent clashes in stations or trains, 35 of them were initially unable to work.

The federal police take care of the security at train stations.

"The violence at German train stations affects not only the metropolises, but practically every major train station," said AfD MP Martin Hess.

“The federal and state governments, cities and municipalities must stop the neglect of our train stations and train station districts together - with a consistent zero-tolerance strategy and careful urban planning,” he demanded.

"It must not be that citizens can drive to work or travel with justified fear."
