Simmern / Hunsrück (dpa / lrs) - An eight-year-old child discovered a smoldering fire in an apartment building in the Rhein-Hunsrück district on Wednesday morning and prevented worse.
The child had first informed the absent mother and then, following instructions from the mother, the fire department, the police said.
The mother arrived before the fire department and put out the fire.
"In the worst case, the whole apartment building could have burned," said a police spokesman.
Since the mother had inhaled smoke, she was taken to a hospital for observation.
According to initial findings, the fire probably started in the area of the refrigerator.
