Hof (dpa / lby) - He sells sausages to take away, fresh from the steaming brass kettle: the "Wärschtlamo" has been part of the townscape of Hof for 150 years.

"The Hofer Wärschtlamo is really only available in our city," emphasized Mayor Eva Döhla (SPD) on Wednesday.

"This is not folklore in Hof, but the Wärschtla men earn their daily bread with the Hofer Wärscht."

In 1871, the first hot lamo with a portable charcoal-fired kettle went to schools and factories.

With a whistle and the saying "Haaß sensa, kold wernsa!"

("They are hot, they get cold") he attracted the hungry.

Up to 34 sausage sellers used to roam the city, reported Wärschtlamo Marcus Traub.

Six Würschtla men are now still active - still without electricity, but with a brass kettle and a small charcoal grate.

"You have to constantly check the thermometer to make sure it doesn't get too lukewarm," explained Traub.

The sausages heated in steam - Wiener, Debreciner, Käsekrainer or Weisswurst - are sold in a “Stölla”, an elongated bread roll.

The “Hofer Wärschtlamo” already has a monument in the city, and it is also available to buy as a smoker.

For the anniversary there will now be pralines, chocolate and schnapps with a new logo.

In a special exhibition, the Bavarian Vogtlandland Museum also provides information about the history of the “Hofer Wärschtlamo”.
