Dresden (dpa / sn) - Saxony wants to support farmers financially when they improve the living conditions of insects on land.

The funding program for insect diversity makes farmers partners in species protection, said Environment and Agriculture Minister Wolfram Günther (Greens) on Tuesday in Dresden.

The cabinet previously approved a corresponding funding guideline.

Farms and other cultivators of arable land get money if they create flower strips or fallow strips on the edges of fields or make mowing more gentle and therefore “insect-friendly”.

This year 2.2 million euros are available for this.

Part of the money comes from the federal government.

"We need insects, we need biodiversity in the cultural landscape," said Günther.

The stocks are rapidly decimated.

That is why butterflies, bees, beetles and other insects and their habitats have to be protected.

The offer is not only aimed at farmers, but also at environmental and landscape conservation associations.
