In Italy's government crisis, the search for a majority for the previously ruling cabinet failed.

Now head of state Sergio Mattarella wants to entrust former ECB head Mario Draghi with forming a government.

At the same time, the President said he did not want to get any early elections because of the pandemic.

Previously, ex-Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who had broken the coalition of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte with the withdrawal of his small party Italia Viva, said the talks for a new edition of the previous coalition had not brought any result.

You now trust in President Mattarella.

Renzi had attacked the policy of the non-party Conte in the fight against the corona pandemic and its economic consequences.

He accused Conte of wasting the huge EU financial aid on alms instead of using them for long-term investments.

Against this background, reconciliation was questionable.

Mattarella made an effort, however, and appointed the President of the House of Representatives, Roberto Fico, as a mediator.

This also declared the talks to have failed.

The differences could not have been resolved, said Renzi.

Conte had previously relied on a coalition of the anti-establishment party 5-Star Movement, the social democratic party PD and several small parties, including Italia Viva.
