Hanover (dpa / lni) - Farmers persevering in a protest camp in Hanover and the state government have reached a compromise in the dispute over stricter fertilizer rules.

The designation of the so-called red areas, in which special restrictions apply due to increased nitrate pollution of the groundwater, will be revised, announced Agriculture Minister Barbara Otte-Kinast (CDU) and Environment Minister Olaf Lies (SPD) in Hanover on Tuesday.

A regionalization should be carried out gradually, which records the pollution of the groundwater in a more differentiated and spatially precise manner.

According to an agreed position paper, restrictions for farmers are to follow the polluter pays principle in future.

There is provision for more flexibility and consideration of regional concerns.

Regionalization should be completed nationwide by March 2022.

For ten days, farmers from the Land Creates Connection (LsV) initiative had been holding a vigil between the two ministries day and night with several tractors and a large tent.
