The police say: This is the reaction to the border checks

Since midnight on January 25, there has been a travel ban from Norway to Sweden.

The reason is the spread of the mutated coronavirus in the neighboring country.

This means that all traffic that crosses the border is stopped by the police.

To enter the country, you must belong to an exempt group, such as Swedish citizens or professional drivers with freight transport.

In one week, 300 vehicles have been rejected.

In addition, about 80 people chose to turn around voluntarily.

- Then it has often been about people who simply forgot that the rules were introduced, says Mikael Holmgren, deputy chief of the border police in region West.

Staffing around the clock

The police have called in personnel from the entire police region West to check that the entry ban is followed and an entire department from the Gothenburg border police has moved up to Strömstad.

Then it is not just about the control of vehicles at Svinesund, but you also have monitoring of, for example, the waterways.

The police do not want to give any exact figures on how many police officers are included in the operation.

But the border is guarded around the clock and each shift is staffed by between 10 and 20 people.
