Kungsängsverket receives and purifies wastewater from around 200,000 people in Uppsala.

The wastewater contains drug residues that can be harmful to both the environment and people, and therefore a pilot project is now underway to find the best methods for cleaning the water.

- Uppsala is growing, we will expand Kungsängsverket and in it we will also install a new purification step for drug purification, says Anna Maria Sundin, engineer at Uppsala Vatten.

Can become permanent

Diclofenac, a substance found in many painkillers, is a priority in the project as it can adversely affect fish kidneys.

The pilot project is expected to run for one year from now.

If the drug treatment becomes permanent, Uppsala will be one of the first municipalities in Sweden to use this treatment.
