Cologne (dpa) - Despite initial concerns, the Handball Bundesliga (HBL) sees the controversial World Cup in Egypt as basically successful.

"The bottom line was that it was better than you might have expected in advance," said HBL President Uwe Schwenker of the German Press Agency.

"I think the Egyptians did it well in the end."

However, the tightly timed league schedule could come under great pressure if, after the corona infection of national player Johannes Golla (SG Flensburg-Handewitt), other Bundesliga professionals test positive after the tournament.

In the final between Denmark and Sweden (26:24) on Sunday alone, numerous Bundesliga players were on the floor.

The first league games after the World Cup are on the program for the coming weekend.

“We are not overly concerned, but of course we will have to watch it.

I would be very happy if only ten days passed and there were no more positive cases, ”said Schwenker.

"If Golla, who hopefully has a mild course, remains an isolated case and the Swedes and Danes also come back healthy, then that would be very good for our clubs and players."

Because after some corona-related game cancellations in the first half of the season, the game plan was already "sewn on edge," said the 61-year-old.
