Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - distance teaching on site - this has been going on in schools in North Rhine-Westphalia since Monday.

Pupils of all grades from level 1 to 13 can in principle also take part in distance learning in schools if they do not have the environment for it at home.

How many students took advantage of the offer on the first day, the Ministry of Education could not say on Monday.

"The schools offer this possibility for a manageable number of pupils," replied School Minister Yvonne Gebauer (FDP).

The new regulation gives an important offer of support to all those who for various reasons currently find it particularly difficult to achieve learning success.

Gebauer emphasized that they would now have the opportunity to concentrate on working on their distance learning tasks under pedagogical supervision in the rooms of the school.

However, face-to-face lessons are not given.

The state chairman of the teachers' association for education and upbringing, Stefan Behlau, also spoke of a sensible extension of the supervision regulation.

"Offers are being made for students who cannot cope with distance learning at home."

In this way, schoolchildren in "difficult situations" can be helped, he told the German press agency.

In principle, the Education and Science Union (GEW) also welcomed the new option.

"Nevertheless, the limit of what schools can currently achieve has often already been reached because there is a lack of staff and the workload is very high," said state chairwoman Maike Finnern.

Schools should be given the opportunity to work with additional staff.

In addition, depending on the equipment of the respective school, according to GEW there could be bottlenecks in the technical requirements - for example, if students did not have laptops.

Previously, in the corona lockdown, the schools were only open for emergency care for students in grades 1 to 6.

Now they can also offer childcare from grade 7.

Participation is voluntary.

The offer cannot be initiated by the parents themselves, according to the school mail.

In general, distance learning in NRW will continue until at least February 12th.

During this time, no classwork or exams should be written.
