Gotha (dpa / th) - Despite the temporary closure due to the corona pandemic, the Gotha zoo was able to keep its visitor numbers stable in the past year.

With 110,000 visitors, it was even a little more than a year earlier, as a city spokeswoman announced.

In 2019, 109,000 visitors were counted.

The summer was able to compensate for the months of the lockdown to some extent.

With almost 21,000 guests, May was the best month in ten years.

Financially, however, the zoo was 40,000 euros behind the targeted income.

This is mainly due to higher costs due to hygiene measures, more frequent cleaning and increased personnel costs in the pandemic, it said.

According to the information, the communal zoo consumes around 800,000 euros annually, which is not covered by entrance fees and city funds alone.

Around 350,000 euros are contractually bound grants from partners.

The Thuringian Zoopark in Erfurt also recorded an increase in visitors last year, despite the pandemic, as he recently announced.

At 32,000 it was even quite clear, a total of 430,000 people came to Thuringia's largest zoo.
