Bochum (dpa) - VfL Bochum has suffered a setback on its intended way back into the Bundesliga.

In the 1: 2 (0: 1) game against Karlsruher SC, coach Thomas Reis's team suffered their first league defeat since mid-December on Sunday.

With that, pursuer Holstein Kiel closed on points for second in the table.

In the empty Bochum stadium, Robin Bormuth (14th) and Jerome Gondorf (84th) ensured the hard-fought victory for Karlsruhe, who have now been unbeaten for six games and improved to fifth.

Anthony Losilla scored for VfL (55th).

Both teams had an open exchange of blows.

However, the guests got off to a better start.

After a Marc Lorenz corner, Bormuth headed to the spot and provided KSC's 14th goal of the season according to a standard.

After the break, the Bochum team increased the pace and once again seemed to live up to their reputation as comeback specialists.

A cross from Robert Zulj, which was extended by KSC goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck, promoted Losilla over the line.

But the guests hit back six minutes before the end.

With a powerful shot from seven meters, captain Gondorf took advantage of the only KSC chance of the second half to score the winner.
