Leverkusen (dpa) - After a corona outbreak in a senior citizen center in Leverkusen, 15 residents died there.

A total of 47 elderly people and 25 employees were infected, said a spokeswoman for the city of Leverkusen on Sunday.

The mutation B 1.1.7 of the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen, which is considered particularly contagious, was detected in the retirement home.

This variant was first discovered in Great Britain.

The first case was diagnosed on December 28, the spokeswoman said.

After that, the infection gradually spread.

In retrospect, it was understood that the virus had been entered by the staff in the retirement home.

The infection had already occurred before the first vaccination of residents and employees on December 30th.

On the day before New Year's Eve, 150 people were reportedly vaccinated in the senior facility.

On January 20, 110 people had received the second dose of vaccination, 40 could not be vaccinated because they had become infected.

The head of the Leverkusen health department, Martin Oehler, told the "Bild" newspaper: "The staff brought the virus into the home."

But it doesn't necessarily have to have done something wrong.

"Because according to everything we know so far, the corona mutation B.1.1.7 is so contagious that you are infected yourself after a few minutes of contact with an infected person."

Employees have been checked weekly with a PCR test since the summer and, since December, with a quick test.
