Mogadishu (dpa) - In the middle of Somalia's capital Mogadishu, there was an attack on a hotel with several dead.

A suicide bomber in a car blew himself up in front of the entrance to the Hotel Afrik on Sunday, reported a dpa reporter who was there.

After the explosion, there were shots.

Attackers probably stormed the hotel, said a police officer, Ali Hassan.

More than nine people were killed.

The dpa reporter reported that shots could still be heard.

Several ambulances have arrived to take away the injured.

It was initially unclear who was behind the attack.

However, the Sunni terrorist militia Al-Shabaab repeatedly carries out attacks in Somalia.

She often targets hotels where politicians, security forces, but also normal civilians meet.

For years the fundamentalists have been fighting for supremacy in the poor country in the Horn of Africa and control large parts of the south and center.

A presidential election will take place in Somalia on February 8.
