In total, it amounts to 40 million doses, which is still less than half from the original agreement.

In addition, they will start being sent out a week earlier than planned.

According to von der Leyen, the pharmaceutical giant will also expand its manufacturing capacity in Europe.

Sweden's vaccine coordinator Richard Bergstöm is positive to the news that Astra Zeneca will deliver an additional 9 million vaccine doses.

He tells SVT Nyheter that it is a "good signal", even though it is far from the previously agreed number of 80 million doses.

- If this is true, it gives some hope.

This is a good sign, it shows that we can solve the problems and that we have a constructive dialogue with the company, says Bergström.

- The most important thing is to get hold of all the vaccine doses we can get, and that is a step in a positive direction.

"Good luck for tomorrow's meeting"

Sweden was first expected to receive 1 million doses from Astra Zeneca in February, which has now shrunk to 400,000 promised doses, which are already intended to start being delivered on 8 February.

When and where the new doses can be delivered and come to the Swedes and the other EU citizens remains to be seen.

Richard Bergström is also part of the European Commission's negotiating group, which already has a planned meeting with Astra Zeneca tomorrow, Monday.

- This bodes well for tomorrow's meeting, what we can expect, that it can be a constructive dialogue, he says.
