Berlin (dpa / bb) - A second case of avian influenza has been detected in Berlin this season.

The H5N8 pathogen had been detected in a mallard in the Britzer Garden in Neukölln, the Senate Department for Consumer Protection announced on Saturday.

The district veterinary office is checking whether and what measures are being taken.

Evidence of the pathogen in the wild bird came from the national reference laboratory at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute.

Avian influenza has been increasing in Germany since the end of October.

There were also cases in Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein and Bavaria.

The first case of the animal disease occurred in Berlin this season in November: in a wild goose in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district.

In contrast to avian flu, no transmission to humans has yet been found in avian flu, the administration said.

However, they threaten domestic fowl and birds in zoos.

In Berlin, the animal disease last occurred in almost 60 wild birds in winter 2016/2017.
