Karlsruhe (dpa) - After the first international indoor athletics meeting in the Corona winter in Germany, the Karlsruhe makers proudly took stock.

«My personal highlight was the smile and joy of all the athletes.

They were very happy and the performance was fantastic, ”said Alain Blondel, the former European decathlon champion and sports director of the first stop on the World Indoor Tour on Friday evening.

"The bubble held, everything worked," said meeting boss Martin Wacker.

"We have set an example for athletics: It's about not just backing away from the pandemic."

130 athletes were at the start in the Europahalle.

The event took place as a pure TV event with an extensive hygiene concept, corona tests for all participants and without spectators and journalists.

The organizers had also made sure that there was no noise.

"It was made very, very safe for the athletes and a wonderful atmosphere in the hall," said sprinter Lisa Mayer from Wetzlar.

The highlight was the French Olympic champion Renaud Lavillenie with 5.95 meters in the pole vault.

Like many other top athletes, the athletes fear that the Olympic Games will be held in Tokyo this summer.

For the German aces there should be national title fights in Dortmund on February 20 and 21.

The European Indoor Championships are planned for the first weekend in March in Torun / Poland.

This Sunday, another top-class event will take place in Düsseldorf with the Istaf meeting.
