Mainz (dpa / lrs) - a thaw and heavy rain in some cases will result in sharply rising water levels on the Rhine in the coming days - and thus in some places for a restriction of shipping in Rhineland-Palatinate.

According to the flood reporting center in Mainz from Friday, the high water mark I at the gauge in Maxau has already been exceeded.

Ships would have to travel more slowly here, in the middle of the fairway and with the radio switched on.

The reporting center at the Maxau and Speyer gauges expects the high water mark II to be exceeded around Saturday evening.

Then ships are no longer allowed to sail there.

For the Rhine route between the Maxau gauge and the state border with North Rhine-Westphalia, further exceedances of the high water mark I can be expected on Saturday.

The German Weather Service (DWD) said on Friday in Rhineland-Palatinate thaw in the mountains and local continuous rain until Saturday evening.

According to the flood reporting center, both the Upper and Middle Rhine are expected to swell in the coming days.

At the gauge in Maxau, highs of 840 to 880 centimeters are predicted as early as Saturday.

In the Middle Rhine, the highest water levels can be expected at the beginning of the coming week.

According to current calculations, the water level at the gauge in Koblenz will then rise to around 750 centimeters.
