Tokyo (AP) - Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has reaffirmed his country's determination to host the Olympic Games despite growing uncertainty and many concerns.

"We're hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer," Suga said at a digital meeting of the World Economic Forum in Tokyo.

"I am determined to realize the games as proof of the human victory against the pandemic, as a symbol of global solidarity and to give hope and courage worldwide," emphasized the Prime Minister.

Suga called for a transparent investigation into the corona pandemic by the World Health Organization.

This is the key to learning how to prepare for future pandemics.

Japan initially plans to pay $ 130 million into a fund to help developing countries acquire coronavirus vaccines.

"We have to learn lessons from this pandemic and be prepared for future crises," said Suga.

The day before, Japan's Olympic organizers had assured that the hosts would not allow themselves to be dissuaded from their course by doubts and criticism of the efforts to host the Games.

"We are making solid progress," said the head of the organizing committee, Yoshiro Mori, after a video conversation with IOC President Thomas Bach.

Mori announced that there would be a meeting between the government, Tokyo's governor, the organizing committee and Bach in February.

One will talk about the further procedure.

A date has not yet been set.
