January 29, 2021 France will close its borders with countries outside the European Union "except for imperative reasons" from Sunday to midnight, to try to curb the spread of the coronavirus epidemic.

This was announced by the prime minister, Jean Castex.

"Any entry into France and any exit from our territory to or from a country outside the European Union will be prohibited, except for imperative reasons, starting from midnight between Saturday and Sunday".

Entries from an EU country "will be subject to a PCR test except for cross-border workers", he added.

"Although the situation regarding Covid in France remains more under control than many of our other neighbors, it is still worrying", said the French premier, and added "the progression of the variants of the virus constitutes a strong risk of accelerating the epidemic. ".

Another measure that France will take to counter the spread of the coronavirus, starting from Sunday, will be the closure of large shopping centers with an area of more than 20 thousand square meters that do not sell food.

Finally, "policemen and gendarmes will be mobilized to check the failure to comply with the curfew, which remains in force at 6 pm throughout France. The violations of some - said the premier - must not frustrate everyone's efforts".

Remote work will be "reinforced" in all enterprises where "it is possible".

"Our duty is to do everything possible to avoid a new lockdown, the next few days will be decisive", concluded Castex.
