The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jeanine Hennes Blasshardt, said that it is the will of the Iraqis that will determine the electoral process and not the international community.
And Blashart added - at a press conference in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad - that the international organization aims to protect the electoral process from the influence of weapons and money by monitoring it.
Al-Jazeera correspondent in Baghdad, Samer Yusuf, said that Blashart’s statements came in the context of a joint press conference with the Iraqi Electoral Commission to talk about the preparations of the relevant authorities in Iraq for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for next October.
The reporter explained that Plasschaert's statements come as a response or a denial of all political expectations that talk about the possibility that the United Nations or foreign countries will supervise the Iraqi elections, indicating that the international official confirmed that the role of the United Nations will be monitoring, and is currently providing advice and technical support to the Iraqi authorities concerned.
The Iraqi Elections Commission, its representatives spoke during the conference on the biometric registration that will be used in identifying the voters, and indicated that more than 12 million cards were distributed out of more than 25 million eligible voters.
She indicated that the UNHCR expanded its mobile teams to reach citizens in various Iraqi regions to update their records and make biometric cards.
The Commission added that it is continuing with state institutions to ensure the success of early elections, at a time when the registration period for political alliances for blocs wishing to participate has been extended.
