Cologne (dpa / lnw) - The Rhine could exceed the first high water mark at the weekend due to thaw and rain at the Cologne gauge.

On Thursday it was initially 4.35 meters, by Sunday it could rise to around 7 meters, as the Cologne city drainage company announced.

The water level is expected to rise from Friday.

The first flood protection measures would be taken.

From the mark 6.2 meters at the Cologne level, shipping is restricted there.

Ships have to go slower and in the middle to avoid larger waves.

From the level of 8.30 meters, shipping is completely stopped.

The water level in the Rhine near Düsseldorf, Duisburg and Emmerich will also rise in the coming days.

The first high water mark could also be reached there, but the trend will not be until the coming week, said a hydrologist from the Rhine waterways and shipping office in Duisburg.

Basically, the German Weather Service (DWD) warned in Essen that there could be local floods in NRW.

In the mountains there is initially a thaw, and it is raining heavily.

In the Sauerland region, as of Thursday afternoon, according to the information, there was still a 50 centimeter thick layer of snow in some places, which is now melting.

Upstream of the Rhine was also warned.

The Rhine flood reporting center in Mainz is expecting flood levels on the Middle Rhine and Upper Rhine in the coming days, as statistically occurring every two to five years.

This was not predicted for NRW on Thursday.
