The Frankfurt Higher Regional Court has sentenced the main defendant Stephan Ernst to life imprisonment for the murder of the Kassel District President Walter Lübcke (CDU).
The judges also determined the particular gravity of the guilt when the verdict was pronounced on Thursday.
Accordingly, the right to order preventive detention is reserved after serving.
With a vigil, students from northern Hesse had called for harsher prosecution of right-wing extremist violence before the verdict was announced.
In front of the higher regional court in Frankfurt they held up portraits of the murdered CDU politician and a banner with the inscription “Democratic values are immortal”.
The students come from the hometown of Lübckes, Wolfhagen, their school was renamed "Walter-Lübcke-Schule".
