Berlin / Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Good news for German airports: with a large majority, the federal states have approved a federal proposal for corona aid amounting to one billion euros.

The German press agency learned this on Thursday from participants in the finance ministers' conference.

In view of the pandemic break-ins, the airports in the southwest are also hoping for financial aid from the state.

The managing director of Baden-Airpark GmbH, Uwe Kotzan, told the German Press Agency that in the period from March to June 2020 alone, costs of 500,000 euros had been incurred at the regional airport because operations had to continue despite extensive travel restrictions.

This was necessary for medical flights, for example.

Compensation for these costs has already been applied for, said Kotzan.

"If that happens, we will be helped a lot."

He did not want to quantify exactly how high the losses at Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport were before closing the balance sheet.

The number of passengers had fallen by around 70 percent compared to the previous year, but freight had increased by almost 56 percent.

Stuttgart Airport is expecting a loss in the higher double-digit million range for the 2020 annual result.

Annual sales are estimated to have halved to only around 150 million euros.

Debt also increased massively last year.

There are no more precise figures yet, they should be in the balance sheet, which is expected for April.

Friedrichshafen Airport did not want to provide any current information.

The managing director of Bodensee-Airport, Claus-Dieter Wehr, had expected at the end of last year a decrease of at least 80 percent in the revenues, which in 2019 had been 9.5 million euros.

The proposal for financial aid goes back to Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) and provides for funding from the federal and state governments in equal proportions.

Airport assistance already provided should be taken into account.

In November, the state transport ministers approved the plan in principle.

However, before the funds were released, the federal government reportedly insisted on commitments from the state finance ministers for co-financing.

Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) now has to release the federal government's share of 500 million euros.

This aid is not yet planned in the current federal budget.
