Two police officers have been convicted in Düsseldorf for seriously injuring a 38-year-old visitor to the old town.

A 29-year-old civil servant was sentenced by the local court to nine months probation and payment of 3,000 euros to the victim.

A 35-year-old police officer was sentenced to six months in prison and 2,500 euros to the victim.

Both were found guilty of dangerous bodily harm in office.

The 38-year-old alleged victim of police violence suffered a double broken nose, a broken eye socket, and bruises and abrasions.

Surveillance cameras had recorded what was happening.

Previously, the 38-year-old is said to have had an argument with his partner, in which the police came.

In the trial at the local court, the accused officials initially denied the allegations.

The victim fought violently, was insane and they only hit the man after warning and only with the flat of their hand.

Otherwise they couldn't have brought him under control.

The public prosecutor and judge repeatedly expressed doubts about the version of the officials: There was no real resistance from the victim to be seen on the video recordings of a camera.

In addition, one of the officers previously testified twice that he had hit the man with a clenched fist.

In addition, it is strange that a total of nine police officers could not have overwhelmed a not particularly strong man otherwise.

The victim testified that he had not resisted, but was immediately thrown to the ground and beaten up by the officers.

After a legal interview, the defense lawyers said that their officers no longer defended themselves against the allegations.

In addition to the criminal proceedings, legal proceedings against the civil servants were also initiated.

According to the Düsseldorf police headquarters, the two officers are not suspended.

A final conviction of more than a year in prison would have threatened them with expulsion from the police force and the loss of their pension rights.

Bodily harm in office can be punished with imprisonment from three months to five years.
