Kiel (dpa / lno) - The state parliament is pushing for the intensive care units in the clinics in Schleswig-Holstein to be strengthened - and the clinics financially.

With a large majority, the parliament called on the state government on Thursday to work for improvements at the federal level.

"The work in the intensive care units is extremely demanding - physically, mentally and emotionally," said the parliamentary director of the Greens, Marret Bohn, in the debate.

"It's all about life and death."

According to parliamentarians at the state and federal level, the government should work to make the nursing profession more attractive.

The constant stress for the employees was already a high burden before the corona pandemic, said Bohn.

The pandemic is making the situation even worse.

With a view to the prospective plan for incidence-based easing adopted by the state government, she warned that not only the number of ventilators but also the personnel situation must be taken into account when opening.

SPD parliamentary group leader Ralf Stegner also referred to the working conditions in intensive care units.

The employees there had already worked to their personal limit before Corona, said Stegner.

"Corona has once again clearly shown why we cannot leave our health care to the dictates of the economy."

In the application, in addition to an immediate program with incentives to return to intensive care and an increase from part-time to full-time, the MPs also demanded that the financing structures in the healthcare system must be constantly examined in the wake of the pandemic and adjusted if necessary.

The current regulations are anything but adequate, said Health Minister Heiner Garg.

Covid-19 wards would have a significantly higher staff requirement than conventional intensive care units.

According to the state government, 494 corona patients nationwide were in hospital in the north as of Wednesday.

89 of them had to be treated with Covid-19 in an intensive care unit - 52 of them with ventilation.
