Hanover (dpa / lni) - The Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice wants to strengthen prevention against left-wing extremism.

"We also have to keep an eye on left-wing extremism," said Justice Minister Barbara Havliza (CDU) on Thursday in the state parliament in Hanover, referring to alleged left-wing arson attacks on the reception authorities in Braunschweig and Hanover in mid-January.

Prevention must be improved, and that also applies to left-wing extremism, stressed Havliza.

The CDU had applied to give the State Prevention Council more support in relevant initiatives.

The Greens MP Helge Limburg criticized the fact that Interior Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) had announced in connection with the arson attacks that he would examine a ban on left-wing extremist anti-fascist groups in the country.

The majority of these groups are peacefully engaged against right-wing extremism, no prevention work is needed.

This must focus on people who developed hatred of the state and democracy.

The CDU MP Jens Nacke countered that the Antifa is listed in the constitution protection report.

The SPD MP Wiebke Osigus emphasized that it was not about criminalizing anti-fascism.
