03 June 2019 A politician from the German city of Kassel, Hesse, was killed in his home with a bullet to the head fired at close range.

This was announced by the local police, explaining that the victim is Walter Lübcke, 65, of the CDU, who for 10 years headed the regional council of Kassel and was also a member of the Parliament of Hesse.



In October 2015, after Angela Merkel's decision to open the borders to hundreds of thousands of Iraqi and Syrian migrants, Luebcke defended the rights of refugees, attracting the arrows of the far right.

"You have to defend the values. And anyone who does not represent these values ​​can leave the country at any time if they do not agree. It is the freedom of every German," he said in a public meeting.



The body was found in a pool of blood on the terrace of the house in Wolfhagen, on the outskirts of the city, at 00.30 local time on the night between Saturday and Sunday.

The police specified that no weapons were found on the spot.

"We are looking for the perpetrator," said Attorney General Horst Streiff, adding that there is no evidence to suggest suicide.



The head of the local judicial police, Sabine Thurau, reported that "we still have no information on the perpetrators and, above all, on the motive".

"We investigate in all directions and we do not exclude any motive," private, political or otherwise, he added.

Candles and messages of condolence were placed in front of the district presidency of Kassel.
