Chemnitz (dpa / sn) - Six months after the fire in a three-sided courtyard in Amtsberg (Erzgebirgskreis), the Chemnitz public prosecutor's office has brought charges against the suspected arsonist.

The agricultural machinist is accused of attempted manslaughter, attempted causing an explosive explosion as well as serious arson and dangerous bodily harm, as the authority announced on Thursday.

According to the public prosecutor's office, the 63-year-old set fire to the courtyard where he and his nephew's family lived on August 12, 2020 using an accelerator in order to destroy it.

He also put an opened acetylene bottle in the already burning barn so that it would explode in the heat.

According to the indictment, he “deliberately accepted the death of the nephew” who was in his apartment.

When he ran out of the house, the uncle attacked him with his fists and a stake.

The 40-year-old survived the severe head injuries only thanks to an emergency operation.

The authority assumes that on this day a long-standing dispute over the inheritance and use of the farm, which had been awarded to the sister of the accused, escalated.

The man has been in custody since then and "admits the course of the crime as far as possible," according to the prosecutor.

The trial against the agricultural machinist begins on February 8 at the Chemnitz Regional Court.
