Göttingen (dpa / lni) - The city of Göttingen is preparing for a bomb disposal of a special kind: Four duds from the Second World War are suspected in a construction pit in the city center.

To defuse 8,300 people have to leave their apartments overnight on Saturday - and that in the middle of the corona pandemic.

Those who cannot be with friends should stay in hotels and evacuation centers.

The contact restrictions will be lifted for the duration of the operation, as the city confirmed.

The train traffic is also restricted: ICEs are diverted, the station no longer approached, as the Deutsche Bahn announced.

Regional trains no longer stop in Göttingen and buses are replacing local rail transport.

The regional bus traffic will also only run to a limited extent all Saturday due to the closure of the central bus station (ZOB).

The city announced that residents had to leave their homes and apartments by 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.

This applies to a radius of one kilometer around the site in Godehardstrasse.

"All buildings, streets and squares, including the Göttingen train station, are then closed," it said.

The mission is expected to last until Sunday morning.

Göttingen has already had a painful experience of defusing a bomb;

the memories of the 2010 accident are likely to be remembered by many.

On the evening of June 1, a defuse in the city center resulted in three deaths.

The evacuation around Schützenplatz was still going on when a bang shook the city center.

The dud had exploded, three employees of the ordnance disposal service of the state of Lower Saxony died.
