Schweinfurt / Frankfurt (dpa) - Hundreds of customs investigators and police officers secured more than 500,000 euros in cash during the large-scale raids against suspected fraudsters on the building site.

On Wednesday, the investigators in the Rhine-Main area searched a total of 59 residential and commercial buildings at 20 locations.

15 of them were in Hessian territory and another five in Bavaria.

The main customs office in Schweinfurt announced on Thursday that the focus of the operation was in the area between Mainz, Frankfurt (Main), Aschaffenburg and Darmstadt.

Arrest warrants have been issued against four suspects.

In earlier reports, the investigators had spoken of 200,000 euros that were seized.

The arrested three men and one woman are accused, among other things, of having embezzled wages with the help of specially founded bogus companies, of having defrauded the social security funds and evaded wage tax.

The damage could amount to up to 15 million euros.

The investigation and evaluation of the documents seized will take several months, according to the main customs office.
