Bayreuth / Leipzig (dpa) - The Bayreuth Festival is getting a new managing director: The administrative director of the Leipzig Opera, Ulrich Jagels, is to move to the Green Hill, as the festival announced on Thursday.

“I consider the move from Richard Wagner's birthplace to the world's most famous festival to be a special step in my career,” said the business economist, who has been in office in Leipzig since 2013.

The Bayreuth Festival emphasized that they were looking forward to the cooperation and hoped that “Ulrich Jagels will not only have an excellent business economist, but also an empathetic manager in their ranks who can help the company achieve the good and stable working atmosphere it needs”.

Jagels succeeds the previous Bayreuth managing director Holger von Berg, whose contract was not extended after five years and will expire in April.

The area of responsibility of the second managing director alongside director Katharina Wagner includes ticket sales and the renovation of the Festspielhaus, while Wagner is more responsible for the artistic part.

Contracts with singers and musicians always have to be signed by both managing directors.

As administrative director of the Leipzig Opera, Jagels was responsible for several construction projects with an estimated total volume of 30 million euros, according to the festival.

This experience could also benefit him in Bayreuth with the million dollar renovation of the festival hall.
