Büren (dpa) - In memory of the Holocaust victims and as a widely visible sign against the right, the Wewelsburg in Büren was illuminated from all sides on Wednesday evening.

The Wewelsburg District Museum and its Nazi memorial took part in the nationwide campaign #LichterGegenDunkheit of the documentation sites and commemorative initiatives on the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp.

The museum announced that the aim of the campaign was to encourage a conscious discussion of current anti-democratic tendencies.

"This includes in-depth historical knowledge as well as recognizing and exposing conspiracy legends and racism," it said.

The Wewelsburg, enthroned above the Almetal near Büren, now houses a youth hostel, among other things.

The museum's Wewelsburg memorial and memorial site is housed in the former guard building, which deals with the dark history of the place under national socialism.

SS leader Heinrich Himmler wanted to turn the castle into the center of the SS.

A concentration camp was built not far from the castle.

Of more than 3900 concentration camp inmates, at least 1285 died. Most of them were forced laborers from Eastern Europe, Jehovah's Witnesses and political prisoners.
