The number of unemployed (category A) recorded a sharp increase in 2020 (+ 7.5%), with 265,400 additional registrants in the 4th quarter of 2020 compared to the 4th quarter of 2019, according to figures released Wednesday by the Dares.
In the fourth quarter, the number of unemployed in France (excluding Mayotte) fell 2.7% compared to the previous quarter to stand at 3.816 million, according to the statistical service of the Ministry of Labor.
The workforce in categories A, B, and C including job seekers in reduced activity reached 6 million, down 1.3% in the 4th quarter, but up 4.5% over one year.
The fall in the 4th quarter and the stronger one in the 3rd (-11%), which was explained above all by shifts in unemployed people having resumed reduced activity (categories B and C), did not make it possible to catch up with the historic increase in the second quarter due to confinement to fight the Covid-19 epidemic (+815,500, or + 24.5%).
In the last quarter, despite the second confinement, there was no influx of job seekers.
Activity was less reduced than during the first confinement and partial unemployment played its role of shield.
In November, 3.1 million employees were on partial unemployment and 2.4 million in December, according to Dares.
In this month of December alone, unemployment was stable (+ 0%).
