Munich (dpa) - FC Bayern donates 100,000 euros for the reconstruction of a synagogue in Munich.

"I thank FC Bayern from the bottom of my heart for its generous donation to preserve the historic synagogue in Reichenbachstrasse," said Charlotte Knobloch, President of the Israeli Cultural Community in Munich and Upper Bavaria, according to a press release on Wednesday.

The building on Reichenbachstrasse was built according to plans by the architect Gustav Meyerstein and was consecrated in 1931.

It was devastated during the pogroms in November 1938 and badly damaged by bombing raids during World War II.

Until the synagogue on Jakobsplatz was opened in 2007, it was used by the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Munich and Upper Bavaria as the main synagogue.

“For many years, FC Bayern has practiced a culture of remembrance in different ways with the aim of combating racism and discrimination of all kinds.

It's about the need to lead a social debate and reject any form of exclusion and hatred, ”said Bayern President Herbert Hainer.

On the occasion of the “Remembrance Day in German Football”, the club wants to raise awareness this weekend with its professional team, its amateurs, its women's football team and its basketball players for more tolerance in society and, as a whole, once again set an example against discrimination.

“As a cosmopolitan club, FC Bayern stands for tolerance and diversity.

In this world homophobia, hatred and exclusion of any kind should not play a role, ”said CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
