Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - North Rhine-Westphalia is striving to accelerate production and supply chains for corona vaccines in its own country.

The state government is currently in talks with companies in order to expand pharmaceutical cooperation, reported Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) on Wednesday in the Düsseldorf state parliament.

Laschet referred to Bayer AG and the Tübingen-based company Curevac, which have signed a cooperation agreement for vaccine production.

Laschet said that he would seek talks with the companies in the next few days together with Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU).

Following the example of the cooperation between Biontech and the US company Pfizer, the Bayer Group will use its global network to accelerate the time-consuming work involved in the approval and development of the supply chain for the CureVac vaccine.

"When the pandemic is over, we will have to talk about pharmaceutical companies in a different tone," warned Laschet.

Strong pharmaceutical companies in their own country are essential in order not to become dependent on foreign countries.
