Potsdam (dpa / bb) - In Brandenburg today the victims of National Socialism are remembered nationwide.

Since a face-to-face event on site is not possible this year due to the corona pandemic, the Sachsenhausen Memorial and the State Parliament are jointly holding an online event.

State Parliament President Ulrike Liedtke and Foundation Director Axel Drecoll will speak on the occasion of the memorial day.

In addition, Drecoll will lay wreaths at the “Station Z” memorial site, donated by victims' associations and representatives of public life.

The deputy director of the memorial site Astrid Ley will speak about the mass murder of Soviet prisoners of war in the former Sachsenhausen concentration camp.

The video contributions will be available on January 27 from 10 a.m. on the social media channels and websites of the memorial and the state parliament.

On January 27, 1945, Soviet soldiers liberated the Auschwitz extermination camp.

For 25 years the day in Germany has been the day of remembrance of the victims of National Socialism, since 2005 the United Nations International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
