Viersen (dpa / lnw) - The city of Viersen has dug an allegedly illegally operated restaurant in the city center.

During a check on Tuesday night, security staff found several guests in the deregistered restaurant, the city reported.

"These were at running slot machines, a counter worker took care of the drinks," said a spokesman.

Several people tried to escape through hidden back exits.

However, most of them were arrested together with the police.

After the discovery of game equipment, the city suspects that illegal gambling was also investigated in the rooms.

When checking the rooms, tampering with the electricity and gas supply was noticed.

A security guard was electrocuted when approaching an unsecured fuse box.

He was taken to a hospital.

The power supply was cut that night.

The fire brigade arranged for the gas pipeline in the basement to be interrupted.

The building was initially sealed.

Its use has been prohibited until further notice.

The city also found that “a large number of people” lived in the building without a permit to sublet.

"Investigations are currently underway," the spokesman said.

The "Neue Rhein Zeitung" had previously reported on the case.
