Berlin (dpa / bb) - Because of the Corona crisis, the “An der alten Försterei” Stadionbetriebs AG and its main partner 1. FC Union Berlin have suffered an annual deficit for the first time since the construction of the main grandstand in 2012/2013.

«Of course the pandemic did not leave us without a trace.

The consequences for the AG are special, ”said Dirk Thieme, CEO of Stadionbetriebs AG at the digitally held general meeting on Tuesday evening.

The AG had to record a minus of 605,000 euros in 2019/2020.

542,000 euros of this came from rent reductions for the Bundesliga club.

The previous balance sheet loss of around 911,000 euros rose to a total of over 1.5 million euros due to the deficit from the 2019/20 financial year.

It will be a while before the planned expansion of the An der Alten Försterei stadium from a capacity of 22,000 to 37,000 visitors.

Thieme expects the building permit in summer 2022 and assumes a construction time of one year.

The modernization measures could be completed in 2023.

The AG and the association still have to overcome two hurdles.

On the one hand, there is the development plan procedure, which contains expert opinions primarily for traffic, but also for the environment and noise.

There is also a plan fortressing process for a tram turnaround in the immediate vicinity of the stadium.
