The cemetery administration has not yet had time to erect all the around 325 tombstones that were overturned during two different weekend nights in mid-December 2020.

This past weekend, even more stones were thrown down - the third grave desecration in the space of just over a month.

- When you overturn tombstones in this way, you commit violence at the heart of people, says Svante Borg who is head of the cemetery administration in the city of Stockholm.

Svante Borg from the cemetery administration is appalled that the burials continue.

Camera surveillance and lighting

After the grave violations in December, the gates to the Northern Cemetery began to be locked at night.

Now the city of Stockholm wants to set up camera surveillance and strengthen the lighting to stop the vandalism.

- Recent grave violations are heinous crimes.

Cemeteries should be safe places for everyone who wants to mourn their loved ones, says Dennis Wedin (M) who is responsible mayor for the cemeteries in Stockholm.
