Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The state officials in North Rhine-Westphalia will receive more special leave to care for their children in 2021 due to the corona pandemic.

This was decided by the state government in its cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Previously, the federal government had introduced an extension of the children's illness days for those with statutory health insurance for 2021.

The state government is also launching a state program so that self-employed or freelance parents are also entitled to day care.

"The regulations also apply if the day care facilities are open, but the parents are appealed to not to let the children look after," it said in a message.

According to a communication from the Ministry of the Interior and the Family, state officials can claim up to 20, but a maximum of 45, special leave days per child per year.

For single parents, the number increases to up to 40 special leave days per child and a maximum of 90 special leave days per year.

As before, the days can continue to be granted to care for sick, handicapped or dependent children.

"In addition, the days can now also be approved if childcare facilities, schools or facilities for people with disabilities have to be temporarily closed due to corona or can only offer their services to a limited extent."

The regulation will be implemented through an amendment to the NRW exemption and vacation regulations.

This applies only to the year 2021 and comes into effect retrospectively on January 5th.
