Leverkusen (AP) - Bayer Leverkusen will have to do without midfielder Julian Baumgartlinger in the coming months.

The 33-year-old professional footballer was injured in the Bundesliga game against VfL Wolfsburg (0-1) on Saturday and suffered a partial rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament.

The club announced this on Tuesday.

The Austrian had signaled in the final phase of the match that he had to be replaced and left the field just five minutes after being substituted on, supported by two physiotherapists.

Baumgartlinger has already had an operation in Munich and the affected cruciate ligament has been reinforced.

The club expects the captain of the Austrian national team to return to Leverkusen in May at the earliest, if he heals appropriately. He will return to Leverkusen on Wednesday and complete his rehab there.
