The head of the Italian government Giuseppe Conte on Tuesday handed in his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella, who asked him to expedite current affairs, according to a press release from the Presidency of the Republic.

Sergio Mattarella received this morning Giuseppe Conte, "who has handed in the resignation of his government".

"The president will take his time to decide and invited the government to remain in office to manage current affairs," the statement said.
