Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - Despite the falling number of employees, the state of Hesse remains a magnet for commuters in the Corona crisis.

Their number fell last year by 0.9 percent, but more than the number of all employees subject to social insurance, which only fell 0.3 percent in the pandemic.

The number of out-commuters even increased slightly.

According to a statement from the regional employment agency on Tuesday, 393,000 of the approximately 2.62 million employees subject to social security contributions in Hesse had their place of residence outside the state.

In the other direction, around 261,000 people registered in Hesse had their jobs outside the state borders.

However, the statistics do not depict the actual commuting movements, especially with the effects of the home office, which is increasingly used during lockdown.

Only place of residence and place of work are compared.

In this category, Hessen only has a negative balance with Baden-Württemberg; more people from all other countries came to Hesse to work than local citizens had to leave the state for work.
