Hoppegarten / Dingolfing (dpa / lby) - The Lower Bavarian project to use cucumber water against slippery winter roads is generating interest in Brandenburg.

According to its own statements, a road maintenance depot in Dingolfing has been using processed cucumber water from a regional cucumber processor instead of molten salt in a test phase to prevent slippery roads.

The cucumber water is cleaned of vegetable residues by the manufacturer and the salty brew obtained is enriched with additional salt to 22 percent.

The Brandenburg State Road Administration showed interest in the project, also with a view to cucumber production in the Spreewald.

"We are now waiting for what the Bavarians have found out as the results of the pilot project," said spokesman Steffen Streu when asked.

Certainly there are still a number of questions to be clarified, above all economic efficiency plays a role.

The topic will be discussed in a country expert group.

The Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation and the RBB had previously reported on the project.

In Dingolfing, the use of cucumber water will replace up to 1000 tons of road salt, as Andreas Maier, head of the Dingolfing road maintenance department, confirmed to the German press agency on Tuesday.

A cucumber production company in the immediate vicinity came up with the idea of the project.

According to Maier, she had a problem with the sewage system, into which all the cucumber water was disposed of.

This is how the idea came about to use the salt water.
