Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The construction industry in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is cautiously optimistic about the new year.

Relatively constant incoming orders and good rates of increase in building permits are positive, said the general manager of the building association MV, Jörg Schnell, on Tuesday.

However, he warned politicians not to let up in order to get investments on their way and to call up and provide investment funds.

"Not to obstruct existing financial investment funds is grossly negligent in the current situation," he said.

Last year this could have led to a paradoxical situation: Despite high rates of increase in incoming orders of 22.7 percent in the first eleven months of 2020, the construction companies in the northeast generated 1.7 percent less sales than in the same period in 2019. The construction industry is nationwide on the other hand, assuming a sales increase of three percent for 2020.

The German housing boom avoided Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The turnover of construction companies in the country with the construction of residential houses decreased in the first eleven months by 10.4 percent compared to January to November 2019.

In November sales were even 27.4 percent below the previous year's figure.

Nationwide, however, a four percent increase in sales in residential construction is expected.

Schnell could not give any clear reasons for the weaker development in the northeast.

Incoming orders developed positively, he said.

From January to November, 22.7 percent more orders were received than in the same period of the previous year.

An increase of 10.9 percent was registered in residential construction.

Why this has not yet led to a corresponding growth in sales cannot be easily determined.

The number of construction workers decreased by 4.7 percent in the first eleven months.

Companies with more than 20 employees are included in the statistics.
