On Monday, Xi Jinping made an appearance on the world stage. The Chinese President gave the opening speech at the digital meeting of the World Economic Forum, which usually takes place in the Swiss ski resort of Davos. The head of the totalitarian people's republic took the chance to put himself in the limelight for almost half an hour without being contradicted and presented his country as a peace power. Without naming the USA, he painted Washington as a provocateur. One of the many ironies of this performance was that - just at the moment when Xi was portraying his country as peace-loving - new tensions were brewing. And China is anything but indifferent to these tensions.
