Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Berlin Senate wants to make several dozen state-owned land available to social organizations for construction projects.

On the areas that were actually intended for single-family houses, among other things, projects for assisted living are to be built, as Urban Development Senator Sebastian Scheel (Linke) announced on Tuesday.

According to him, around 40 undeveloped and comparatively small plots of land have so far been identified as suitable for such use for the common good.

Other areas would be examined.

The tendering process for the first ten pilot plots is expected to start in February 2021, most of which are located in Treptow-Köpenick and Marzahn-Hellersdorf.

Since Berlin has not sold state-owned properties for a long time, leasehold agreements are planned for a period of 90 years.

"In the tense property market, social institutions have a particularly difficult time finding affordable properties, for example for assisted living," explained Scheel.

"I am delighted that we have now succeeded in jointly closing a gap in the optimal use of state land and also using very small state land for the common good."

The central associations of the independent welfare organization (LIGA Berlin) also expressed themselves positively.

Social organizations often support the homeless or people with disabilities in assisted living.

But: "It is becoming more and more difficult to find apartments for this," explained Gabriele Schlimper, who is in charge of the project at LIGA.

"The social organizations have long pointed this out and are therefore extremely pleased that the State of Berlin is now making land available for this."
