Starnberg (dpa / lby) - The avian influenza continues to spread in Bavaria.

The H5N8 virus was detected in a seagull in Herrsching am Ammersee, as the Starnberg district office announced on Tuesday.

In order to prevent the transmission of the disease, which is also known as bird flu, there is, among other things, compulsory housing for poultry in the entire district from the next possible date until at least March 15.

Avian influenza is not considered dangerous for humans.

The animal disease has appeared in Bavaria since November.

The pathogen was first detected in hunted mallards in the Passau district.

This was also confirmed for two dead swans from the Landsberg am Lech district and three swans in Lower Franconia.

The infectious disease occurs mainly in water birds.

The highest incidence and death rates are observed in chickens and turkeys - in some cases up to 100 percent.

Avian influenza is a notifiable animal disease and is therefore controlled by the state.
