18 years old.

The age when we decide to move towards one sector rather than another.

Not so easy when you are so young and have little experience.

However, decisions have to be made.

Fear then invades young graduates: fear of making the wrong choices, fear of regretting.

To help future students to move serenely towards one path rather than another, there is no point in rushing.

Edouard Magd, 21, therefore chose a generalist course for his first year in order not to rush anything.

The bac in his pocket, Edouard has a vague idea of what he wants to do.

He loves architecture, that's for sure!

But being an architect is not an option.

He's heard of engineering so he's making inquiries.

“I thought to myself that as an engineer, I could probably do a lot of things.

I then went to the Salon de l'Étudiant in Paris and visited the stands of engineering schools.

I also looked at the entry procedures, the competitions… ”he says.

He discovers this universe and decides on HEI (Hautes Études d'Ingénieur) in Lille.

"It is a school renowned for the construction industry and as there is also a building, architectural design option, I said to myself that I would try it out," continues Edouard.

Discover a universe before specializing

He joined the integrated preparation course at the HEI school and continued his studies in the 1st year of the engineering cycle (3rd year if we take into account the preparation): the one which is generalist.

“I knew I liked the architecture and the building, but I wanted to be sure of my choice!

»Specifies the young student.

“During this 1st year, I was able to discover all the subjects through different modules: chemistry, IT, resistance of materials… This allowed me to have a global vision of what I could do as an engineer »He continues.

But his choice remains unchanged: he specializes in BAA- building, architectural planning.

“This 1st year really allowed me to give myself time to confirm my choice,” says Edouard.

He then advances more calmly in his studies, reinforced by his decision.

His advice for future high school graduates?

“If you have no idea what you want to do, go to school open days in accordance with the health rules in force, and opt for a course with a generalist year.

If you have a more specific idea, go to the open houses of the schools you have spotted.

You will be able to meet and discuss with the teachers on site ”.

A good first approach!
